William wanted to say no, but his feet started moving toward David before his brain could stop them. As they got closer, they could see David's face: his eyes were still closed, but there was a peaceful smile on his lips. He looked completely different from the scared, tired person they had met yesterday. When they were about ten feet away, David's hands slowed down and the music got softer. Then he stopped playing and opened his eyes. He saw the four people standing there watching him, and his face turned red with embarrassment."I'm sorry," David said quickly, standing up from the broken piano bench. "I know this isn't my piano, either. I was just... I needed toβ€”""Don't apologize," Lisa said before William could speak. "That was beautiful! How did you make that old piano sound so good?"David shrugged. "Music is music, I guess. It doesn't matter if the instrument is perfect. What matters is what you feel inside."William found his voice again. "David, where did you learn to play like that?"David looked down at his dirty shoes. "I taught myself, mostly. When I was younger, I had some lessons, but that was a long time ago.""Some lessons?" Roberto asked. "That didn't sound like some lessons to me. That sounded like years of training."David didn't answer right away. He seemed to be thinking about whether he should tell them something important."David," Lisa said gently, "you don't have to tell us anything you don't want to, but we'd like to understand. Yesterday, you broke into our concert hall just to sit at the piano. Today, we find you here playing this broken instrument like it's a Steinway. There's obviously more to your story."William was surprised by how kind Lisa was being, but he had to admit he was curious, too. The music he had just heard was professional-levelβ€”maybe even better than some of his orchestra members.David sat back down on the broken piano bench and put his hands in his lap. "I used to be different," he said quietly. "Three years ago, I had a scholarship to study music. I was going to be a concert pianist."The four people exchanged looks. This was not what any of them had expected to hear."What happened?" Tom asked.
