"They offered me a job," Ethan said simply. "A good job? A really good job with enough money that we'd never have to worry about rent or your dance lessons or anything like that again."

Mia studied his face with the perceptiveness that sometimes unnerved him. "But it would mean leaving here."

"Not exactly leaving. The shop would still exist, but it would be different and I'd be working somewhere else most of the time."

Mia nodded thoughtfully, then asked the question that had been nagging him all day. "But would we still be us?"

That evening, after Mia was asleep, Ethan sat at his kitchen table with the contract documents Victoria had given him. The financial security they offered was beyond anything he dared to dream.

Mia could have dance lessons at the best studios in Phoenix. He could afford the kind of medical insurance that would cover any future health issues. They could move to a house with a real yard and a bedroom for Mia that didn't share a wall with his shop.

But would they still be the Rodriguez family who'd built their life on helping neighbors and finding joy in simple things?

His phone buzzed with another text from Victoria. "Emma made me promise to tell you that she's already planned where your toolbox should go in the new shop. She's very concerned about proper feng shui for automotive repair."

Despite everything, Ethan found himself laughing. Maybe the question wasn't whether they'd still be themselves, but whether they were ready to become the bigger version of themselves that this opportunity would allow.

He picked up his phone and typed back, "Tell Emma I'm very interested in her feng shui theories and tell her I'll have an answer for her mom by Friday."

Three dots appeared immediately. Then, "She says, 'Friday is perfect because that's when you'll see how good we all look together at fancy events.'"

Ethan stared at the message, realizing that somewhere along the way, this had stopped being just about a business opportunity. It had become about family, the one he'd been protecting and the one that seemed to be welcoming them in.

The eviction notice was still on his table, but it no longer felt like a crisis. It felt like the push he needed to make a decision he'd been too scared to make on his own.

Wednesday morning brought the first sign that Ethan's potential new life wouldn't be without complications.

He was installing brake pads on Tommy Nguyen's delivery van when a sleek red Porsche pulled up outside the shop. The driver was a man in his 50s wearing an expensive suit that screamed corporate authority and he was definitely not there for automotive repairs.

"Ethan Rodriguez."

The man approached with the kind of confident stride that suggested he was used to getting his way. "I'm Richard Blackstone, senior partner at Blackstone and Associates. I represent several business interests in this neighborhood."

Ethan wiped his hands on his shop rag, immediately on guard. "What can I do for you, Mr. Blackstone?"
