Outside, a Phoenix Fire Department truck was pulling up to the curb, presumably for the inspection mentioned in that morning's notice. But for the first time all week, Ethan didn't feel afraid. Whatever came next, he wasn't facing it alone.
"Victoria," he said quietly, "I owe you an apology. I let fear make me doubt things I should have trusted."
She moved closer, her eyes bright with unshed tears. "Does this mean you're still planning to escort two very excited young ladies to their first charity gala tonight?"
Ethan looked around his shop, his father's legacy, his daughter's security, his community's gathering place. Whatever happened with inspections and harassment and business deals, this was worth fighting for.
And maybe, just maybe, the woman standing in front of him was worth fighting for, too.
"Wouldn't miss it for the world. Though I have to warn you, I've never worn a tuxedo before."
Victoria's smile was radiant. "Don't worry, Emma's picked out your bow tie. She has very strong opinions about formal wear accessories."

The Orpheum Theater glittered like a jewel in downtown Phoenix's evening skyline. Its restored 1920s facade illuminated by elegant spotlights. Red carpet stretched from the curb to the glass doors, flanked by photographers capturing the arrival of Phoenix's social elite.
Ethan adjusted his bow tie nervously as their sedan approached the dropoff point. Acutely aware that he was about to enter a world he'd only seen in movies.
"Daddy, you look like a movie star," Mia whispered, tugging at her elegant navy blue dress. A gift from Emma that had arrived that afternoon with a note. "For my best friend's first fancy party."
"You both look absolutely beautiful," Victoria said from across the sedan, and Ethan's breath caught.
She wore a midnight blue gown that somehow managed to be both stunning and understated. Her hair swept up to reveal diamond earrings that probably cost more than his monthly rent. But it was the warmth in her eyes as she looked at Mia that made his heart skip.
Emma practically bounced in her matching dress, clutching her small purse that contained, according to her detailed explanation, emergency lip gloss, tissues for happy tears, and mints in case I get nervous and my mouth tastes funny.
As they stepped out of the car, camera flashes immediately began popping.
"Victoria, over here."
"Miss Sterling, who's your escort tonight?"
The attention was overwhelming, but Victoria handled it with practiced grace, keeping one protective hand on Emma's shoulder and gesturing for Ethan and Mia to stay close.
"Sterling Dynamics CEO Victoria Sterling with her daughter Emma, aged 10, who will be performing tonight. We're here to support the Phoenix Children's Hospital, and we're honored to have friends joining us for this special evening."
Inside the theater's opulent lobby, Ethan felt like he'd stepped into another century. Crystal chandeliers cast warm light over marble floors and elegantly dressed guests mingled with champagne glasses and quiet conversation.
Emma immediately spotted several of her piano classmates and began introducing Mia with obvious pride.
