Grace challenged him.

Langford mocked her background.

“You’ve been here four days,” he said. “You think you understand this business better than people who have done it for decades?”

Grace held her ground.

“I understand people. And when you treat human beings like line items, you damage more than jobs. You damage loyalty, productivity, and the foundation that makes a company work.”

The room shifted.

Grace won the room.

Four months later, her life looked different. Emma had her own room in a better apartment. The Orion deal went through using her plan, saving jobs and protecting the company’s reputation.

She also grew close to Maggie. Twice a week, Grace took her to appointments. They had lunch afterward and talked like family. Maggie told stories about William as a boy. Grace told Maggie about Emma and the dreams she had once put aside.

Then everything nearly fell apart.
