They had been called not by the crew, not by FBO security, but by Harrison Whitfield's security director, who had been in contact with the Port Authority FBO liaison since 5:18 a.m. They were not here about Serena. They were here because the disorderly conduct report had been filed and Patricia's volume in the lobby had in the last 2 minutes provided ample supporting evidence. 

"Ma'am," the first officer said, "we're going to need you to lower your voice." "You don't get to tell me to lower my voice." Patricia said, "That woman, ma'am, she can't do this to me. I've been in this industry for 22 years. I have never—" The second officer took a step forward. 

Patricia kept going. She kept going for 45 more seconds, about 40 seconds longer than her best interests required, and then the officers made the decision that her continued volume and agitation left them with, and Patricia How was escorted out of the Pinnacle Executive Air terminal in handcuffs. 

Her chignon, once a perfect architectural achievement, was now fully undone. Her foundation had tracked down her face in two dark lines. Her name tag caught the morning light as she was walked through the glass doors. A line cook at the FBO cafe, young man barely 20 who had been watching from behind the service counter with his phone resting on the espresso machine uploaded his footage at 6:17 a.m. 

His caption, "Flight attendant who blocked a billionaire from her own jet now being arrested. Teterboro. This is real." By 9:00 a.m., the combined view count on the two clips, Marcus Webb's tarmac footage and the Cafe Cook's lobby footage, had passed 2 and a half million. "Teterboro Tarmac Karen" became a search term by 10. 

At 6:40 a.m., Travis Odum came to Diane's desk. He pulled a chair from the adjacent station and sat down across from her without being invited. He had his coffee cup in his hand, the same one he'd been carrying when he walked in an hour and a half ago. He hadn't drunk from it. "I need to understand exactly what you did," he said. His voice was careful, measured. The voice of someone choosing each word the way you choose footing on a surface that might not hold. 

"I confirmed the registered owner's identity through the manifest system and reported the situation to Summit Aviation's operations line." Diane said, "Everything I did is documented and timestamped." "You went around the crew. You went around me." "The crew wasn't answering their phones, and I believed what was happening was wrong." 

Odum looked at his coffee cup for a moment. "Diane, you've been here for 4 years. You've been good at this job. You have a future here." He paused. "I'd hate to see that jeopardized over a misunderstanding." "It wasn't a misunderstanding," she said. "The manifest was clear. Her identity was confirmed. What happened on that tarmac wasn't a clerical error or a communication breakdown. The crew made a judgment call about who she was based on what she looked like, and they were wrong." 

Odum set down his coffee cup. His hands were very still. "There are operational considerations at this FBO that are more complicated than they appear from a desk agent's position. There are processes in place that have been running for a long time. I would strongly suggest you let this morning's events be processed through the appropriate channels rather than escalating." 

Diane looked at him. She had known Travis Odum for four years. She had found him difficult and territorial, and occasionally petty in the specific way that people who have middling authority tend to be petty. She had never found him frightening. Right now, sitting across from her with very still hands and a word like "escalating," deployed with that particular careful weight, he was something different. 

She stood up. "Mr. Odum." She said, "I've already given a full account to Summit Aviation's HR department. They've asked me to preserve all documentation from this morning, including manifest records and my communications log. I'd like to do that from here, and then I'd like to speak with their legal team when they're ready." She picked up her tablet. "I think it would be best if I did that independently." 

She walked away from the desk. She didn't run. She walked at the same pace she'd walked across the tarmac. Committed. Unhurried. Certain.
