"It's Detective Ramos," James said, phone pressed to his ear, already reaching for a pen. "About Kershaw." He listened for a long moment, nodding slowly. "Understood. Appreciate the update."He hung up and looked at Nancy."They arrested him. Logan. Impersonating a law enforcement officer. Official misconduct charges pending. It's real. It's on record."Nancy felt something loosen in her chest for the first time in days. Not relief, exactly, but something close to it—a small crack of light after a week of nothing but pressure. "That's something," she said."It's something," James agreed. But his voice didn't carry the same lightness hers did. "It's not enough, though. Logan's a piece. He's not the whole board sitting on a lien against our house."Nancy knew he was right, but she let herself hold on to the win a little longer anyway: one man in a vest, finally facing consequences for terrorizing her in her own driveway. Pearl's eyes dropped to the folders in front of her."So maybe now is a good time to explain why the board is still sitting on a lien threat built from violations that suddenly appeared the same week he did."Pearl's hands stilled over the papers. "Mr. Kershaw's arrest doesn't change anything with the board's findings. He was a contractor, a separate entity from—""Stop." Nancy's voice cut clean through the office. "Stop saying that like it means something. You signed off on his company's invoices. You called the emergency meeting. You read the fines out loud yourself. You're not separate from any of this."
