"I'll tell them everything."By late afternoon, James's phone rang. Gordon Lacy's voice came through fast, focused, all hesitation gone."I've reviewed what you sent. It's more than enough to move forward: fraud, extortion, falsified official proceedings. I'm opening a formal investigation, effective immediately."James closed his eyes for a moment, relief and urgency tangled together in his chest. "Gordon, we've got a locksmith scheduled at our house in less than two days. The lien's already been fast-tracked.""I heard." Gordon's voice hardened. "I'm not letting that happen while this case is live. Give me the night. I'll have something in motion by morning."James hung up and looked across the kitchen at Nancy, at Harold's case of memory cards still open on the table, at the folder that had finally found someone with the power and the will to act on it."Less than two days," Nancy said quietly."Then we don't waste a single hour of it," James answered.Gordon Lacy called before 8:00 the next morning, his voice already moving fast, like a man who hadn't slept much and didn't plan to slow down now that he'd started."I opened the investigation last night," he said. "What about the lien? The locksmith's still scheduled.""Working on it. Give me the morning."
