"Can I help you?""Ma'am, I need you to step away from the vehicle." His voice was flat, bored, almost, like he'd said it a hundred times to a hundred people who all looked like her."This is my driveway."He didn't answer that. He pulled a small laminated badge from his vest pocket and flashed it fast, then tucked it away before she could read it. "Logan Kershaw, Compliance and Security. Your vehicle's in violation of parking standards."Nancy looked at her own car, parked exactly where it always was, exactly where it had been parked for three years. "Violation of what?""Non-compliant placement." He was already writing on a pad, not even looking up. "I'm citing you. You've got one hour to move it, or it gets towed.""Towed?" Nancy almost laughed, except nothing about this was funny. "From my own driveway?""That's right." He tore the ticket free and held it out to her like she should be grateful he wasn't doing worse. "And every day this stays unresolved, the fine doubles."She didn't take it right away. She looked at him instead. Really looked at the vest that wasn't a real uniform, at the badge he'd flashed too fast to read, at the way he stood like he expected her to shrink."Who sent you?""Compliance," he said, like the word itself was an answer. "Ma'am, I don't have time to argue policy with you. You want to keep the car, move it. You don't? That's your business. But the tow is already scheduled.""Nobody scheduled anything. You just got here."Logan smiled then, and it wasn't a nice smile. "You'd be surprised how fast things get scheduled around here."Nancy felt her pulse pick up. Not fear, exactly; something closer to disbelief mixed with rage—the kind that comes from watching someone lie to your face and dare you to call it out.
