She stepped outside just as the tow truck driver, a heavyset man who wouldn't meet her eyes, began lowering the flatbed behind her car."You've got to be kidding me."Logan climbed out of the SUV, unhurried, like a man arriving right on schedule. "Told you, ma'am. One hour. It's been an hour and a half.""And I never agreed to anything." Nancy planted herself between her car and the tow truck. "You can't just take someone's car because you say so.""I'm not taking it because I say so." Logan's voice had an edge to it now, harder than before. "I'm taking it because you're in violation, and you didn't correct it.""There is no violation! This is my car in my driveway, exactly where it's been for three years!" Her voice climbed, sharp and unafraid. "You made that up!""Ma'am, step back from the vehicle.""No." The word came out flat and final.Nancy crossed her arms and didn't move an inch, even as the tow driver hesitated, glancing between her and Logan like he wasn't sure what came next.Logan's jaw tightened. He took a step closer, close enough that Nancy could smell the coffee on his breath. "You're interfering with compliance enforcement. That's a serious problem for you.""Is it?" She didn't blink. "What are you going to do? Arrest me in my own driveway?""That's exactly what I'll do." His voice dropped low and mean. "You're obstructing. I can have you in cuffs before that truck even finishes hooking up your car. You want to test that? Go ahead. See how well it goes for you."Something cold moved through Nancy's chest. Not fear—she refused to call it fear—but something close enough to make her hands curl into fists at her sides."You're not a real officer," she said again, louder this time, loud enough for the tow driver to hear, loud enough for the empty street to hear. "You can't arrest anybody."
