"I have every right," Gordon said calmly. "Venus Ashley, you're under arrest for fraud, extortion, and falsification of official records."Two sheriff's deputies stepped forward from the back of the room, where they'd been waiting quietly the entire time."You can't do this!" Venus said, standing abruptly, her voice cracking now, all the ice finally melting into panic. "Do you know who my husband is?""I do," Gordon said, unmoved. "He's currently under separate review for improperly influencing a federal personnel complaint. That's a conversation for another day."The deputies moved in. Venus tried to step back, but there was nowhere left to go—just a room full of neighbors who had watched her build an empire out of their fear, now watching it collapse in real time.Nancy stood beside James, watching the woman who had once smiled at her in a driveway and called her "quite behind" get handcuffed in front of the entire street she'd spent years trying to control.Outside, through the clubhouse window, the locksmith's truck sat idle at the curb—canceled, useless, exactly where it had been the whole time.The board reconvened that same afternoon, this time with Gordon Lacy standing at the front of the room instead of sitting in the audience."Given the evidence presented and Ms. Denver's cooperation," he said, "the county is recommending immediate dissolution of the Cedar Hollow Compliance and Security contract, effective today."The vote passed unanimously. Not one board member hesitated this time; not one glanced toward the back of the room where Venus used to sit. The chair moved quickly through the rest, motions that would have taken weeks under normal circumstances now cleared in minutes, the whole board eager to scrub every trace of Venus's fingerprints off their books."The lien against the Whitford property is voided, effective immediately," the chair announced. "All retroactive fines assessed against the Whitford household are formally rescinded."Nancy felt her shoulders drop for the first time in what felt like weeks, a weight lifting she hadn't fully realized she was still carrying."Furthermore," the chair continued, reading from a page Gordon had clearly helped him draft, "the board authorizes formal damages to the Whitford family for wrongful enforcement action and reputational harm, amount to be determined in coordination with the county."
