"I need a name checked," Greer said. "Ray Malone, mechanic. Rides with the Angels."There was a pause on the other end."Then Dale, you sure you want to go there?"Greer didn't answer that directly. "I need to know what I'm looking at."Another pause."You're looking at about 30 years of chapter loyalty and a man who has never once gone looking for trouble," the voice on the other end said. "But from what I've heard, trouble has found him a few times. And it always regretted it."Greer was quiet."His daughter's at your kid's school?""Apparently.""Dale." The voice was plain and direct. "Leave it alone."Greer hung up without answering. He sat in the quiet of his office. The thing about a man like Dale Greer is that he'd spent 20 years being the most powerful person in any room he walked into. That does something to a person. It makes them believe that all situations bend to power. That every problem is a problem of force. He knew, somewhere in the back of his mind, that this situation might be different. But he also had a son and a lifetime of habit. And the particular blindness that comes from never being wrong for long enough. So he picked up his pen and he started making notes.Thursday went by without incident. Cass went to practice, did her work, came home, studied, called her father to check the time for Saturday dinner.Friday morning she arrived at school at 7:40. She went to her locker. She opened it and everything inside was wet. Her notebook, her backup textbook, the spare practice clothes she kept there. All of it soaked through.Someone had poured water in through the vents overnight. Methodical, patient, done when no one was watching. She stood in front of the open locker for a moment. Students walked past behind her. Some glanced over. Most didn't. She reached in and pulled out the notebook. The pages were swelled and stuck together. She'd have to rewrite everything in it from memory. Three weeks of notes. She set it on top of the locker. Then she pulled out the soaked practice clothes, then the textbook. She laid them out one by one on top of her locker, calmly, the way you'd unpack groceries. At the far end of the hallway, Tyler Greer and Brandon Holt stood watching. They weren't trying to hide it. They wanted her to see them watching. They wanted to see what she'd do. She didn't look at them. She picked up the wet notebook and the wet clothes and walked to the trash can at the end of the hallway. She stopped in front of it and then she turned. She looked directly at Tyler. He was smiling.
