They sat together and went over what the hearing would look like: who would be on the committee, what the formal procedure was, what Cass had the right to say and ask.At 10:30, Cass's phone buzzed. It was a text from a number she didn't have saved. She opened it. It was a photo, a screenshot of a social media post. The account was anonymous. The post claimed to be from a student at Harlow Creek Community College describing a new team member who had come from Clarksville with a history of fighting with coaches, intimidating other students, and bringing outside persons to interfere with school activities. The post had been up for 3 hours. It had 47 shares. Anonymous. No way to trace it in the next few hours. She put her phone face down on the table. Coach Reeves looked at her."It's fine," Cass said. She wasn't sure that was true. But she said it.At 11:00, Amber sent a text:"Bad news. I asked my friend in the admin office to check whether any of the camera footage from that hallway was backed up anywhere. She found something. Madison had been in the system. She deleted what she could access. But the system does an automatic backup to an offsite server. She didn't know about the offsite backup. My friend has a technical contact who says the footage might still be recoverable. But it takes time. Maybe 12 hours, maybe more."Cass stared at the text. 6 hours until the hearing. She typed back: "Get the request in. Whatever she needs to do. As fast as possible."She sat with it for a moment. Then she made herself stop calculating. She'd work with what she had by 5:00. Everything else was beyond her.She went to her afternoon classes. She showed up. She sat down. She took notes. Between classes she walked. She kept her hands loose at her sides. She kept her face ordinary. At 3:15, she was crossing the far end of the parking lot when she heard the sound. It came from behind the maintenance shed. Low voices. Then louder. Then the specific tone of a conversation that had gone from tense to threatening. She moved toward it. She came around the corner of the shed and stopped.Amber was standing against the wall. Tyler was in front of her. Cole was 2 ft to his right. Tyler was holding a piece of paper—the form, the same form, printed fresh. Cole had his phone out and was filming.Insurance, she understood immediately: if Amber signed under duress, they had footage of her signing willingly; if she refused, they had footage of the refusal to use however they wanted.
