Cass looked at her."It was Madison," Amber said. "She was in there for like 20 minutes. My friend said she didn't think anything of it at the time. But after the hearing announcement, she started putting it together."A silence."She deleted the footage," Cass said."Probably. I don't know for sure.""She deleted the footage," Cass said again, to herself this time. Not angry, just placing the fact where it belonged. So that was the picture: No usable video from Amber's phone. Likely no camera footage from the school system. A disciplinary hearing scheduled in 60 hours on the basis of complaints generated by a sheriff covering for his son. And standing against all of that, two women in a parking lot with a busted recording and a legal pad full of notes that nobody had subpoenaed.Cass looked at the sky for a moment."Go to class," she said to Amber. "Don't do anything yet. Don't talk to anyone in the administration office. Don't tell anyone about the recording or about Madison and the cameras.""What are you going to do?""I'm going to call my father."She didn't call him right away. She sat on her bike for a while first. Not avoiding it, just thinking. She thought about the 60-hour window and what was inside it. She thought about what she could do without help and what she couldn't. She thought about a dozen conversations she'd had with Ray over the years about what it meant to stand on your own and what it meant to know your own limits. Her father had a saying. He'd said it to her so many times it had become furniture in the room of her mind. He said, "There's a difference between needing help and knowing when to call for it. One is weakness, the other is judgment."She pulled out her phone at 5:30. Ray picked up on the second ring."Hey," she said."Hey yourself," he said. "How was the shop today?""Good. Finished the Nashville bike. She runs clean." A pause. "What's happening?"She told him all of it this time: the bracelet, Tyler's foot, the wet locker, the hearing, Greer's visit to the administration office, the deleted footage. She laid it out in sequence, plain, without editorializing. The way he'd always told her to report a situation: "Just the facts. Let the facts make the argument."When she finished, he was quiet for a long moment. She could hear him breathing. She could hear faintly the shop sounds behind him even though he'd closed an hour ago. He always stayed a little late.
