"We'll come to order," she said. Her voice was even. Whatever she was thinking, she kept it behind the voice. That was the quality of a good chair. "This is a preliminary disciplinary review regarding a formal complaint filed against Cassidy Malone, enrolled student, member of the Hawks cheerleading squad. The complaint alleges conduct detrimental to the institution's image and disruptive behavior toward fellow team members."She looked up. "Ms. Malone, you've been made aware of the complaint?""Yes," Cass said."You've waived representation?""I'll speak for myself."Marsh nodded, made a note. "The college will present the basis for the complaint. Ms. Malone will respond. The committee may ask questions of either party or any witnesses present." She looked at the gallery once, briefly. "I would ask that anyone in attendance who is not a designated witness or participant observe quietly. This is a formal proceeding." She paused. "That applies to everyone."No one in the gallery moved. No one spoke. It was the loudest kind of acknowledgement.Marsh turned to Callaway. "Dean Callaway."Callaway opened his folder. He began to read from a prepared statement. He read about conduct unbecoming a team member. About alleged social media posts damaging to the institution. About a pattern of interpersonal conflict brought from a previous academic setting. He read it in the flat tone of a man reading something he had not written and was no longer certain he believed. When he finished, the room was quiet.Marsh said, "Miss Malone..."Cass stood. She hadn't rehearsed a speech. She'd thought about what to say, but she hadn't written it out and she hadn't practiced it in front of a mirror. She'd learned something years ago from her father, who had once told her, "If you have to rehearse the truth, you're telling the wrong truth."She stood with her hands at her sides."The complaint that Dean Callaway just read was not generated by anyone at this college," she said. "It was generated by Sheriff Dale Greer, who came to Dean Callaway's office on Wednesday morning and requested that a review be opened. I wasn't told this. I found it out from another student. I don't believe Dean Callaway was told that the complaint came from outside the school."She looked at Callaway. Callaway was looking at his folder."The social media posts referenced in the complaint are anonymous," Cass continued. "I did not post them. They appeared approximately 14 hours after Sheriff Greer's visit to this office. I can't prove who posted them, but I'd ask the committee to consider the timing."She paused."The claim of disruptive behavior toward team members: what actually happened is this. On Wednesday of last week in the main hallway of this building, Madison Greer removed a bracelet from my wrist and dropped it on the floor. Tyler Greer placed his foot on it. I retrieved it and walked away. That is the incident."
