"From now until Friday at 5:00." She did the math out loud. "About 60 hours."Amber looked at her. "Cass, this is serious. Greer basically walked in and invented a reason to put you on review. Without camera footage, without witnesses who'll go on record...""You have the footage from the hallway," Cass said.Amber went still.Cass looked at her. "I knew you were recording," Cass said. "I saw your reflection in the window across the hall. I figured you'd tell me when you were ready."Amber's expression cycled through three or four things in quick succession. "I should have told you sooner. I'm sorry. I just didn't know if...""It's okay," Cass said. "Can you send it to me?"Amber pulled out her phone. Opened the camera roll, found the file. Her expression changed."What?" Cass said.Amber held up the phone. The video was there. The file was there, but when she pressed play, the audio was there—you could hear voices, movement, the ambient noise of the hallway—but the image was wrong. The camera had been partially covered by her jacket pocket as she'd tried to make it look like she was just holding her phone. The angle was low and skewed and showed mostly floor and the lower portions of people's bodies. You couldn't see faces clearly. You couldn't see Tyler's foot on the bracelet. You could hear, faintly, the sound of something hitting the floor. You could hear Tyler's voice saying something about a garbage bin. But it was muffled, cut in and out.Without the visual confirmation, without being able to say with certainty, "This is the person who did this," it was the kind of footage a lawyer could pull apart in 30 seconds."I thought I had it," Amber said. Her voice was small. "I thought I got it.""It's still something," Cass said."It's not enough."Neither of them said anything for a moment."What about the camera in the hallway?" Amber said. "The school has cameras.""We'd need to request that footage formally. And that request would go through the administration office, which is the same office that just put me on review." Cass looked at the building. "If Greer already has someone in that office, the footage may not be available by Friday." She said it evenly, not bitterly, just as a fact.Amber stared at her. "You're taking this really calmly.""I'm not calm," Cass said. "I'm just not loud."She put her hand in her jacket pocket. Felt the bracelet on her wrist. Felt the new clasp her father had put there."There's something else," Amber said. She hesitated. "The footage from the hallway cameras... I have a friend in the office, the one who told me about the hearing. She said someone came in yesterday and requested access to the camera admin system. Said it was to check the practice room booking schedule."
