"He didn't threaten me, exactly," she said. "He was very friendly about it. He said he just wanted to check in. He said he'd heard there were some tensions on the squad, and he wanted to make sure I wasn't getting caught up in anything that wasn't my business." A pause. "He said it like that: my business.""Was Cole there?""Behind him, a little way back, just standing there."Cass nodded slowly."He said," Amber continued, "that there was going to be a hearing tomorrow and that anyone who had said anything about the team situation, anyone who had made statements or planned to make statements should think really carefully about their own situation. He said it in that way where you can't repeat it to anyone because the words don't sound like a threat when you write them down. But they are.""I know," Cass said."He told me to sign something," Amber said. "He had a printed form. Some kind of written statement saying that I had witnessed no inappropriate conduct from him or from Madison and that the team environment was positive and professional. He said it was just to keep things from getting complicated." She looked at Cass. "He had a pen ready.""Did you sign it?"Amber looked at her. "No. I said I needed to think about it. He said I shouldn't think too long." She paused. "Then he smiled and walked away. And it was somehow worse than the not smiling."Cass was quiet for a moment. She looked at the path in front of them. The light was going gray through the tree cover. It was going to be dark early."Are you scared?" Cass said."Yes," Amber said. "Are you?"Cass considered the question. "I'm careful," she said.Amber looked at her. "That's not the same thing.""No," Cass agreed. "It's not."They sat for a moment. Then Cass took out her phone and opened the recording app. She pressed record. She let it run for a few seconds just to confirm the little red dot was active. The audio meter was moving. Then she placed the phone face up on her knee in the open and looked at Amber."Tell me exactly what he said," she said. "As exactly as you can remember it."Amber blinked. "What are you...""Not for a court," Cass said. "Just so we have it. Every detail you can remember. What he was wearing, where Cole was standing, what time it was. Every word you can recall."Amber straightened. She took a breath. She started talking. They stayed on that bench for 38 minutes. When they finished, Cass stopped the recording and sent it to her own email and to a backup account she maintained on a server she paid for separately. She was not a paranoid person, but she was her father's daughter. And her father had taught her that you can't retrieve what you didn't preserve.
