"Friday at 5:00," he said."Yeah, 60 hours give or take."Another silence. Longer this time."You going to have anyone in that room with you?" he said."Coach Reeves said she'd be there. She's on my side. And Amber, maybe.""Amber, the girl from the hallway?""Yes.""She got anything usable?""The audio might help if someone can enhance it. The visual won't hold up on its own."Ray was quiet again. She could almost see him in the shop. Sitting on the stool he kept near the workbench. Big hands resting on his knees, looking at the floor the way he did when he was thinking."Dad," she said."Yeah?""I'm not asking you to fix it.""I know you're not.""I just wanted you to know what it looks like."A pause. "Friday," he said. "I'll be there.""You don't need to.""Cass." His voice was level, not sharp, not insisting. Just a fact being stated. "I'll be there."She was quiet for a moment. "Okay," she said."Don't go looking for trouble between now and then," he said. "Don't avoid it, either. If something happens, handle it the way I know you can. But don't walk into anything you don't need to walk into.""I know.""You call me if it changes before Friday.""I will." He paused once more. Then, in the same voice he'd used since she was small: "You eat today?"She almost smiled. "Yes.""Good."After she hung up, she sat for another few minutes in the parking lot. Then she heard Ray's voice again—different call, different hour, calling Big Walt. She didn't hear that call. She didn't need to. She drove back to her room.Thursday was supposed to be quiet. It wasn't. The day started normally enough. Practice at 7:00. Cass showed up, did her work. Madison was there, and the look Madison gave her when she walked in was different from the usual look: less contemptuous, more calculated. The look of someone who knows something you don't. Cass noted it, filed it, kept moving. After practice, after classes, after the afternoon had gone as gray and ordinary as possible, Amber found Cass at the library. Her face was white."Tyler came to find me," Amber said.Cass closed her book. They went outside. Down the side path behind the humanities building, where there was a bench nobody used because it was in shadow most of the day and the Wi-Fi didn't reach. Amber sat down. Her hands were in her lap and they were not quite still.
