Behind her, the glass doors opened and Amber came out. She stopped when she saw Ray. There was a beat of the particular stillness that happens when you are suddenly standing next to a presence you've heard about but haven't been next to before.Ray looked at her. "You're Amber," he said."Yes, sir.""Ray," he said. He extended his hand. She shook it."Thank you," he said, "for what you did in there."Amber looked like she didn't quite know what to do with that. She opened her mouth and then said, "I should have done it sooner.""Maybe," Ray said, "but you did it when it mattered. That's the thing that counts."Amber looked at Cass. Cass looked back at her. Something passed between them that didn't need words: the specific understanding of two people who have been through something together and know that the being through it has changed the shape of what they are to each other.Coach Donna Reeves came out next. She stopped on the steps. She looked at Ray. She looked at the bikes across the street. She looked at the line of men now mounting them, settling in, the quiet mechanical preparation of riders who have somewhere to be. She looked at Cass."Monday," she said. "7:00 a.m. Practice.""I'll be there," Cass said.Donna nodded. She looked at Ray once more. Something in her expression softened for just a moment, the way things soften when you've been carrying something and you realize you don't have to carry it alone."Thank you for coming," she said to him."I was always going to come," he said. She went down the steps and walked toward the faculty parking lot.Walt came across the street. He moved the way he always moved, which was slowly and without any particular hurry, the walk of a large man who had learned that the world would wait for him."Ready?" he said to Ray."Give me a few minutes," Ray said.Walt looked at Cass. He had a face that was not easy to read, but she'd known him long enough to read it anyway. There was something warm in it. Something that said he was glad to be here, glad this was the shape it had taken."You did good, kid," he said."Everyone keeps saying that," she said."Keep hearing it," he said. "It's probably true."He went back across the street.Ray looked at his daughter. "You going to be okay here?" he said."Yes.""You need anything between now and when you come home?""No."He looked at her for another moment. "The hearing isn't the end of it," he said. "Greer's got a long reach and a short temper. He'll be careful for a while. Then careful will stop being comfortable for him and he'll try something."
