Sheriff Dale Greer arrived at Harlow Creek Community College at 9:15 on Wednesday morning. He didn't come in uniform. That was the first thing people noticed. He came in slacks and a jacket and his department credentials in his breast pocket, which he could show to whoever needed to see them, but no uniform, no cruiser parked in front. He'd driven his personal truck and parked it around the side of the building near the maintenance entrance. Deliberate. Everything Dale Greer did was deliberate. He found Dean of Students Herb Callaway in his office on the second floor. Callaway was 53, soft around the middle, with the particular anxiety of a man who had spent 20 years trying to keep the peace between students and their parents and had learned that the students were almost never the problem.Greer closed the office door behind him. He didn't sit down right away. He stood."I'm here about a student situation," he said.Callaway straightened in his chair. "Okay.""A new transfer student. Cassidy Malone. She's been causing some friction with a few members of your cheer squad and the athletic program."Callaway blinked. "I haven't heard anything about friction from Coach Reeves.""It's not the kind of thing that goes through official channels yet," Greer said. "That's why I'm coming to you now, before it gets bigger than it needs to be. I've had some complaints from concerned parents. The girl has a disruptive background. I thought if we got in front of this early, we could avoid a whole mess later.""Disruptive how?" Callaway said.Greer sat down then. Settled into the chair like a man who had all the time in the world."There are some behavioral issues at her previous school," he said. "Some interpersonal conflicts she created. I'm not in a position to share specifics without a formal request going through channels, but the pattern is there. I think it would be in the college's interest to schedule a formal disciplinary review. Just a hearing. Just to establish a record and make sure we're managing any potential liability."Callaway looked uncomfortable. "A disciplinary hearing requires a specific incident. I can't just schedule one based on...""There's a social media situation," Greer said. "She posted some things last week about the college that could be construed as damaging to the institution's image. I can get you screenshots. And there's the question of her conduct during team activities. I've had reports about aggressive behavior toward other squad members."Callaway was quiet for a moment. Greer watched him. Patient, waiting."Sheriff," Callaway said carefully, "is this a formal complaint?""Consider it an informal advisory," Greer said. "I'm just looking out for the college. For the community, same as always."
